We're all familiar with the changes that start happening to women around the age of 45 but how do our male counterparts fare at this age? Today I'm on hand to discuss the changes that men experience during their late 40s and how it compares to the female menopause.
Hello everyone, I’m Earle, working in the Education Department at A.Vogel. The ladies who have written so much on the female menopause have asked me to find out a little more about what is going on with us boys when we hit 45 (well, 45ish).
People with some miracle hormone to promote will have us believe its all down to testosterone levels suddenly falling but in fact this happens very gradually from the age of 30 or so.
Nevertheless, there are a couple of changes associated with this. More of that remaining testosterone becomes altered to DHT (di-hydro testosterone) and oestrogen – yes, we all make oestrogen – becomes more influential.
The result? Hair-loss, prostate enlargement and man-boobs. Fantastic!
Some other people might say that lifestyle is the major factor. After all, we all begin to suffer the effects of youthful excess at some point. And that point is after 40. We handle sugar less efficiently, so the tummy grows and we become tired. Blood vessels begin to stiffen up and concentration declines. And alcohol gradually dulls our ability to learn new skills, so the young ‘uns at work laugh at us.
Then again, yet more people would say its all down to sociology. An accountant I know tells me his clients’ relationships most predictably hit the rocks shortly after the kids leave home, as two middle-aged, full time parents wonder what on earth they did before the kids came along.
It’s also perhaps the time when our careers are beginning to peak, with the resultant long hours and stresses. And on top of them pesky kids at work laughing at us, their culture seems an ever more distant and strange construct. No wonder Radio 1’s target audience is 16-25.
I can’t prove a thing at the moment but I suspect the truth might lie in both our body and our lifestyle. If we’re so tired from working that we’re rubbish company at home, the kids have deserted us and we’re seeing something less than an Adonis and more of a dinosaur in the mirror, well who wouldn’t feel fed up?
