Bumblebee Conservation Trust The Bumblebee Conservation Trust was founded in response to growing concerns about the 'plight of the bumblebee'. In the last 70 years two species have become nationally extinct and several others have experienced dramatic declines. BBCT aims to prevent further declines, and to raise awareness of the problems bumblebees face. The loss of our bumblebees is the result of profound changes to the countryside. Pesticide use increased steadily until the 1990s. Hedgerows were ripped out and ancient flower-rich meadows ploughed. Bumblebees depend on flowers for food, and they nest in hedgerows, woodland and old meadows. As these habitats disappeared, so did the bees. Their loss is of great concern. They are not just beautiful and endearing; they are a vital part of the ecosystem. Bumblebees pollinate many important crops as well as numerous wildflowers and herbs. We cannot do without them.
